By Michael F. Pettinger (Assistant Professor of Literary Studies)
This semester, the Literary Studies program welcomes Fiore Sireci and Justin Neuman, who will join me in teaching The Invention of Literature.
Fiore Sireci is an educator in the fields of language, literature, and social history. He earned a doctorate from the University of Edinburgh in English Literature, and wrote a dissertation on women’s writing and politics of the eighteenth-century revolutionary era, and has written several articles on Mary Wollstonecraft. Dr. Sireci is a former Fulbright scholar, having taught classical literature, poetry, and English language studies in the Jujuy region of Argentina. He is currently writing a memoir and social history of a small Southern Italian town. He lives in New York City with his wife Caitlin Morgan (Director of ESL at the New School)and two daughters, Cordelia and Beatrice.
Justin Neuman is a scholar and teacher of Anglophone literature and culture in the 20th and 21st centuries whose research gravitates around the interplay of religion and secularism in contemporary fiction and the cultural logic of the fossil fuel era. Before coming to The New School, he served as assistant professor at Yale University, where he fell unexpectedly in love with teaching the canon from Ancient Greece to the present day. In the classroom, he is guided by the philosophy that student-centered seminars are the heart of a liberal arts education. At the same time, he believes students must train in the modes of attention and sustained acts of imaginative investment necessary to unlock the literary as a vital mode. His pedagogy aims to help students improve not only as “close” readers, but as passionate, contextual, critical, and historical ones as well. Professor Neuman’s publications include Fiction Beyond Secularism (Northwestern University Press, 2014) as well as articles in the journals Criticism, The Minnesota Review, Novel, and essays for the scholarly blog Immanent Frame. He also serves as associate editor for the University of Virginia Press, where he oversees the book series “Cultural Frames, Framing Culture.”
We are very excited to welcome Justin and Fiore to the Literary Studies faculty!
