Ann Snitow May 9, 1943-August 10, 2019 Ann Snitow, a founding faculty member of Lang College and the creator of the Gender Studies Program at the New School, passed away on August 10, 2019. She was a beloved member of the Literary Studies faculty. While indeed her books and essays are crucial texts in feminist studies and in the life of the mind, as Literary Studies colleagues our remembrances here are more personal, testaments not just to her work but to the power of her being.

Playwriting courses are offered through The Arts and can be combined with any major or minor program in Literary Studies. In the course, students employ a series of exercises to develop characters, settings, scenes, plot, and eventually a one-act play. Students read and discuss their plays in class during the writing and revising process; they also analyze a variety of dramatic texts and other sources to discover individual voice and understand narrative structure. Literary Studies alumni (class of 2011) Julio Torres was the subject of a January 13 New York Times article, “Meet Julian Torres, the New ‘S.N.L.’ Star No One Sees” by Jason Zinoman. The article, which relates Torres’s rapid rise in Saturday Night Live’s writing ranks since his debut this past September, praises Torres’s slyly subversive brand of humor, stating that he “has already introduced a new style to the show.” Zinoman highlights Torres’s digital shorts “Melania’s Moments” and “Wells for Boys,” the latter written with Jeremy Beiler, as examples of Torres’s “incongruously dreamy comedy.”
