Minor in Writing or Literature

We are excited to announce that in addition to the concentrations in Writing or Literature, undergraduate students across The New School may now also minor in these fields. Our programs have been designed with the goal of giving students rigor and flexibility in their course of study.

MINOR IN WRITING

Overview

Students in Writing develop a unique authorial voice informed by an acquired familiarity with contemporary and classic styles. Courses emphasize essential communicative and research skills, a profound understanding of craft, and the development of personal voice in an encouraging atmosphere.

Eligibility

Undergraduate students from any school of the university who are not majoring in Liberal Arts can select a minor from Lang’s offerings. Similarly, Lang students who are not pursuing a BA or BS in Liberal Arts can select a minor from those offered in other schools, provided they meet the prerequisites and related requirements. For more information, contact the chair of Writing, Wendy S. Walters at waltersw@newschool.edu, or visit here.

MINOR IN LITERATURE

Overview
Literature students develop a distinctive critical-analytical voice and firm grounding in literary theory and history and their vocabularies. Many of the faculty teaching literature are also creative writers and understand approaches to the study of literature from the perspectives of practitioner, scholar, and critic. Although many students in literature classes are themselves creative writers, literature writing almost always takes the form of the critical essay or research paper.
