Ann Snitow May 9, 1943-August 10, 2019 Ann Snitow, a founding faculty member of Lang College and the creator of the Gender Studies Program at the New School, passed away on August 10, 2019. She was a beloved member of the Literary Studies faculty. While indeed her books and essays are crucial texts in feminist studies and in the life of the mind, as Literary Studies colleagues our remembrances here are more personal, testaments not just to her work but to the power of her being.

Artistic Director Alexandra Chasin, Associate Professor of Literary Studies at Lang College, The New School, created Writing On It All, a participatory writing project open to all interested members of the public. In sessions led by artists and writers, participants are invited to write on the interior surfaces of an out-of-use house – and no two sessions are alike. Facilitators and session members take to the walls to write, attending to the dynamics of writing as well as to pressing issues of the day. […]
The Literary Studies department welcomed its faculty and students back on Tuesday September 6. It was a great opportunity for new students to get to know the department, and to hear faculty Jennifer Firestone and Alexandra Chasin read from their recent publications.
The event highlighted recent publications from a variety of faculty including Jennifer Firestone’s chapbook Swimming Pool; Wendy Walters’ Multiply/Divide: On The American Real And Surreal; Alexandra Chasin’s Assassin Of Youth: A Kaleidoscopic History of Harry J. Anslinger’s War on Drugs; Mark Greif’s Against Everything, and the anthology The Fire This Time: a new generation speaks about race featuring an essay by Wendy Walters.
There was also a raffle with students winning copies of these books, along with copies of Jean Rhys’ Wide Sargasso Sea, soon to be highlighted in an upcoming celebration of its 50-year anniversary, to be celebrated in the Literary Studies department on Saturday, October 22!
